The availability of the Southern Cattle Company offers that rare opportunity to purchase a property, steeped in history dating back to the arrival of Spanish settlers in Florida.
After a successful venture into the steel business, the current owner John Downs purchased the first cattle and original 400 acres of SCC in 1992, site of the familiar "Red Barn" headquarters near Highway 231. Since then, Mr. Downs has put his personal touch on the land while acquiring nearly 10,000 total acres throughout the years.
Southern Cattle Company is located on Hwy 231 approximately 10 miles northwest of Marianna in Jackson County, Florida, and just 25 miles south of Dothan, Alabama. The land is less than 10 miles from Marianna Municipal Airport and offers expansive room for cattle, agriculture, on-site living quarters and facilities for a working Southern Cattle Ranch.
The Florida Caverns State Park borders the property to the south, and the UF/IFAS Extension Education Center at Greenwood, a partner with SCC for extensive genetic research on feed efficiency, is to the northeast. The meticulously managed nature of this property lends itself to what makes Southern Cattle Company a truly, Once In a Lifetime chance to gain an expanse of history, beauty, and successful development in one complete package. Significantly, the way this asset was assembled piece by piece is not something that can be duplicated in this day and time, therefore making Southern Cattle a unique opportunity. Those fortunate enough to consider this acquisition will know that they have purchased a generational asset obtainable by only a few.
Southern Cattle Company is not a newcomer to the cattle business.
PURCHASED IN 1992, the original 400 acres are now where the main headquarters stand, lending a familiar landmark in the large Red Barn structure that serves as the heart of operations and cattle sales for SCC. The original herd of Charolais paved way for the addition in 1995 of the Angus herd. Until 2008 these were the only two breeds at Southern Cattle Company, having consistently gained top rankings in the industry. With the addition of a Brangus line, Southern now boasts the largest herd of Brinks based genetics in the Southeast. Adding two more stock lines, Beefmaster and Brahman, has guaranteed a solid future for Southern Cattle Company to assist other commercial cattlemen in their goals for profitability and growth in the most efficient manner.
OVER THE YEARS not only has the heard makeup changed but the land and facilities have grown and modernized as well. Today SCC operates on approximately 14,000 acres in the panhandle of Florida. By using their state of the art facilities located on the ranch, Southern Cattle Company can help to fill the needs of cattlemen not only in the US but around the world. The professional staff at SCC are well versed on the regulations for exporting embryos out of the United States and routinely work with customers in many foreign countries. They are also fortunate to be able to partner with the University of Florida in their Growsafe facility that enjoins the ranch. With this opportunity, SCC has been able to be a leading pioneer in feed efficiency research.
Agriculture is a large part of Southern Cattle Company with approximately 1500 acres in current crop production. This helps SCC run a sustainable supply of the feedstocks used in the daily operations so vital to maintain their livestock. Farming provides another source of income through hay production, usable timber and other crops suited to the coastal climate.
